Tarot Cards - When Death Appears Should You Be Afraid?
By Lyn Thurman
Traditionally the Death card is portrayed as the Grim Reaper riding on horseback, leaving death in his wake and searching for the next victim. Admittedly this is not an image which you really want to see and can quite easily convince the querent that his or her demise is about to occur.
Our first thoughts on this card immediately steer us to physical death. It very, very rarely means death in that sense and no reader should ever interpret it that way for a client. This card is about transition - the moving from one part of life into another. Death and re-birth are a continuous cycle in nature; think of the seasons as an example.
When we move away from the fixed notion that death means just, well, dying we can begin to look at it's influences in life. If you stop to think about it - how many times have you already been dealt this card?
- A change of job
- Puberty
- Marriage
- Divorce
- Starting/finishing college or school
- Parenthood
- Retirement
All of the above involve a transition. Let's look at retirement as an example. You have worked for 40 years then one day you don't have to go in the office anymore. Your daily routine changes dramatically and probably so does your financial situation. Priorities, friendships, responsibilities, social status all also undergo a transformation. The working chapter in your life has closed and you now have a clean sheet to start filling with your post-retirement life.
When you see Death in a reading be prepared for a change coming your way. It will be a necessary ending of a part of your life; the energy of death is unstoppable. There are usually some strong emotions involved too - endings are often fraught with fear and sadness because something familiar has been taken away and we are faced with the unknown.
We must not forget that after death comes life (think back to the seasons). If you have been dealt this card then you are also being shown that new beginnings are on the way. You have to go through a transition, and often a learning process, but you will come out the other side. Think of Death as the 'one door closes, another opens' card!!
